Keynote Title: Machine Learning - A Key Ubiquitous Technology in the 21st Century

Abstract: Machine learning (ML) is a key and increasingly pervasive technology in the 21st century. It is going to impact the way people live and work in a significant way. This lecture starts with an overview of the key ML concepts and different types of ML algorithms. In general, machine learning algorithms simulate the way brain learns and solves an estimation/recognition problem. They usually require a learning phase to discover the patterns among the available data, similar to the humans. An expanded definition of ML is advanced as algorithms that can learn from examples and data and solve seemingly interactable learning and unteachable problems, referred to as ingenious artificial intelligence (AI). Next, recent and innovative applications of ML in various fields and projects currently being pursued by leading high-tech companies such as Google, IBM, Uber, Baidu, Facebook, Pinterest, and Tesla are reviewed. Then, machine learning algorithms developed by the author and his associates are briefly described. Finally, examples are presented in different areas from health monitoring of smart highrise building structures to automated EEG-based diagnosis of various neurological and psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, the Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and autism spectrum disorder

Short CV: Hojjat Adeli received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1976 at the age of 26. He is currently an Academy Professor at The Ohio State University where he held the Abba G. Lichtenstein Professorship for ten years. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journals Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering which he founded in 1986 and Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering which he founded in 1993. He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Neural Systems since 2005. He has been an Honorary Editor, Advisory Editor, or member of the Editorial Board of 144 research journals. He has authored over 600 research and scientific publications in various fields of computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, and medicine, including 16 ground-breaking high-technology books. He is the recipient of over sixty awards and honors including three Honorary Doctorates from Lithuania, Spain, and Italy, and Honorary Professorship at several Asian and European Universities. He is a member of Academia Europaea, a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering, a foreign member of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and Polish Academy of Science, a Distinguished Member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and a Fellow of AAAS, IEEE, AIMBE, and American Neurological Association. He was profiled as an Engineering Legend in the journal Leadership and Management in Engineering, ASCE, April 2010, by a noted biographer of legendary engineers.

Keynote Title: IPR and Applications to e-Forensics and Smart Cities

Abstract: This  talk  is  concerned  with fundamental aspects of Intelligent Pattern Recognition (IPR) and  applications. It basically includes the following: Basic Concept of Automata, Grammars, Trees, Graphs and Languages. Ambiguity and its Importance, Brief Overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Brief Overview of Pattern Recognition (PR), What is Intelligent Pattern Recognition (IPR)? Interactive Pattern Recognition Concept, Importance of Measurement and Ambiguity, How it works, Modeling and  Simulation, Basic Principles and Applications to Computer Vision, Security, e-Forensics, Road Sign Design, biomedical diagnosis, Safer biomedical diagnosis, Traffic and Robot Driving with Vision, Ambiguous (design of Road Signs vs Unambiguous (Good) Road Signs, How to Disambiguate an Ambiguous Road Sign? What is Big Data? and more Examples and Applications of Learning and Greener World using Computer Vision. Finally, some future research directions are discussed.

Fellow, IAPR, ISIBM, IETI and IEEE & ISIBM Outstanding Achievement Awardee, Tenured Full Professor, Northeastern University, USA, iCORE (Informatics Circle of Research Excellence) Visiting Professor, MIT, Harvard, University of Calgary, Canada, Otto-Von- Guericke Distinguished Guest Professor, Magdeburg University, Germany,  Zijiang Visiting Chair, ECNU, Shanghai, China,  as well as honorary advisory professor of many key universities in China, including Sichuan University, Xiamen University, East China Normal University, Shanghai, and Guangxi Normal University, Guilin. Prof. Wang received his BSEE from National Chiao Tung University (Jiaotong University), MSEE from National Taiwan University, MSICS from Georgia Institute of Tech, and PhD, CS, Oregon State University. Dr. Wang has published over 26 books, 300 technical papers, 3  USA/European Patents, in PR/AI/TV/Cybernetics/Imaging, and is currently founding Editor-in-Chief of IJPRAI (International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence), and Book Series of MPAI, WSP.  


Prof. Dr. Chun-Hsien Chen

Keynote Title: Informatics Enabled Human-Centric Product Design

Abstract: Technology, consumer sophistication and business globalization have led to a highly competitive business environment which demands faster new product (tangible or intangible) introduction and more complex and value-added, customized products. Since the primary role of product design is to bridge users and technological systems in contexts of product use, it is increasingly important to focus on human-centric concerns, such as understanding the users’ behaviour, needs and requirements of different social and cultural segments. As these human-centric factors become more important in product design and development along with increasing complexity from technological advances such as networking and embedded technologies, multi-disciplinary information management becomes critical for achieving high product integrity. Yet, because of the complexity, uncertainty and cross-disciplinary nature of human and societal factors, formal mechanisms for incorporating these factors consistently into the product design and development process have not been well established. In this regard, the future relevance of the research in design informatics has attracted academics with various backgrounds, mainly from the domains of computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, product design and innovation, and consumer intelligence.

Short CV: Chun-Hsien Chen is Associate Professor (tenured) and Director of the Design Stream Program in the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his BS degree in Industrial Design from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, MS and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA. His teaching and research interests are in collaborative/human-centric/consumer-oriented product design and development, knowledge engineering, design sciences, engineering informatics and artificial intelligence in product/engineering design. He has more than 220 publications in these areas and has secured a total research grant of more than S$5,000,000 as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI. He has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Engineering Informatics (ADVEI), Elsevier, since January 2013. Besides ADVEI, he is/was an editorial board member of Recent Patents on Engineering, Journal of Kansei, Heliyon, etc. He is/was a Shanghai Eastern Scholar (Guest Eastern Chair Professor, 2011 – 2014), a Guest/Visiting Professor of Tianjin University, National Cheng Kung University, Shanghai Maritime University, and Chaoyang University of Technology.
