Scope:

Steelworks are active in all parts of the world, producing steel by two main production routes, the integrated route, which makes steel from virgin primary raw material, and the electric route, which produces steel by melting scrap deriving from end-of-line products. One of the main characteristics that make the steel production chain very complex is the continuous, still not perfectly understood, chemical and physical transformations that primary raw materials as well as semi-finished products undergo through the different steps of the production chain. Therefore, acquiring, process, storing, and disseminating digitalized processing information, which conveys relevant and sensitive information about facilities, and machines along the production route, is of utmost importance. Modern information systems and technologies play a fundamental role in this aspect.

In the last decades, steel industries are becoming smarter and more flexible, thanks to the digital transformation that is connecting processes and products with new intelligent information systems and technologies. As a result, distributed and interconnected systems, supported by technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), etc., are able to collect, exchange, and analyse large volumes of data. On one side, these systems increase the automation and data exchange processes, transforming information into knowledge, which increases the efficiency of decision-making processes and thus increases the companies’ productivity, efficiency and competitiveness as well as other economic benefits. On the other side, systems are more vulnerable to cyber-attacks, since networks are open up to intruders and it makes attacks on information and automation systems much more likely in the future.

The workshop aims are gathering the latest research achievements, findings and ideas concerning the design, development and implementation of intelligent information systems and technologies in the steel field. This includes novel technological frameworks, smart solutions for efficient data handling and exploitation, methods and technologies in control system cybersecurity, advanced monitoring and control tools and solutions, AI and Machine Learning (ML) approaches customized to the needs of the steel sector. Moreover, industrial case studies are also welcome.

The workshop is organized under the project entitled “Automatic surveillance of hot rolling area against intentional attacks and faults” (AutoSurveillance), which has received funding from the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (G.A. 847202).
